Chapter 3 Implantation of Magical Identity
Chapter 3 Implantation of Magical Identity
Before he knew it, the edge of the forest was almost within reach, and Sasuke's heart began to race. He secretly prayed that he wouldn't run into anyone, but unfortunately, prayers in this world often don't come true.
As soon as Sasuke stepped out of the woods, a familiar figure came into view. He hadn't expected to run into someone he knew in such a remote place, and Sasuke's vision blurred.
The person who appeared in this remote place was none other than Sasuke's teacher, Konoha's elite Jonin, Hatake Kakashi, who happened to be passing by.
Sasuke felt a sense of unease. The newcomer was not only familiar with Sasuke's social circle, but was also a Jonin of Konoha. Although Kakashi usually seemed unreliable, Sasuke knew very well that Kakashi's qualities and strength as a ninja were beyond question.
Seeing that Kakashi had spotted him and Zeref and was walking towards him, Sasuke's heart sank heavily.
Sasuke thought to himself, somewhat heavily, that he hadn't even had a chance to learn the gravity magic Zeref had mentioned before Zeref had already revealed his whereabouts.
When Kakashi walked up to him, Sasuke's heart was in his throat. He murmured, "Kakashi-sensei..." but then didn't know what else to say.
Was he supposed to say that he was even taking in people of unknown origin in order to become stronger? Finding himself unable to explain, Sasuke could only passively wait for Kakashi's impending interrogation.
"Training again, Sasuke, Zeref. You're really working hard," Kakashi said lazily, his gaze casually passing over Sasuke and Zeref, his tone familiar and relaxed.
Sasuke's eyes widened in disbelief as he stared intently at Kakashi. For a moment, he wondered if he was under some kind of genjutsu. How could he possibly hear Zeref's name from Kakashi's mouth? And why didn't Kakashi have any doubts about him being with Zeref?!
He abruptly turned to look at the calm-faced Jelf, his eyes asking: What on earth is going on?
Just as Sasuke was feeling a little dazed, Zeref spoke up naturally, "Yes, Kakashi-sensei, we're heading back now."
Then, glancing at Mavis in his arms, he explained, "Mavis hasn't been feeling well and is a bit tired. I was just about to take her back to rest."
Kakashi nodded knowingly and comforted her, "Even if you and Mavis aren't very talented, you still need to be careful with your training."
Zeref smiled and replied, "I know, thank you for your concern, Kakashi-sensei."
Having said everything he needed to say, Kakashi turned to leave. Before turning away, he glanced at Zeref and Mavis, who were smiling. For some reason, a strange feeling flashed through his mind, but it was fleeting. Before Kakashi could ponder it, it seemed to be forcibly erased by a peculiar force.
Seeing Kakashi gradually walk away, Sasuke finally came to his senses. He turned his head sharply, staring at Zeref in disbelief, and asked urgently, "What on earth happened! How did you do that? Was it a genjutsu?!"
Sasuke could hardly believe what he was seeing. Zeref had easily fooled Kakashi, who was one of the strongest Jonin!
Seeing Sasuke's wide eyes and slightly childish face, Zeref curled the corners of his lips and said, "It's just a little bit of deceptive magic. Implanting the existence of me and Mavis into the minds of everyone in Konoha is only a temporary measure. When people start to doubt it, they will find that it can't withstand scrutiny."
On the way back, Sasuke witnessed firsthand the power of the "little bit of bewildering magic" that Zeref had mentioned.
No one they encountered on the road doubted the existence of Zeref and Mavis. Some people, whose names Sasuke couldn't even recall, were able to call out Zeref and Mavis's names, which was more terrifying than any ninjutsu Sasuke had ever seen.
He couldn't help but glance at Jelf again and exclaimed, "If you're a spy from another village, that's terrifying."
"Don't worry, Sasuke, I have nothing to do with ninjas, and I don't plan to do anything for the time being," Zeref said calmly. However, the word "for the time being" didn't really reassure Sasuke.
Sasuke, feeling like he'd stirred up a huge mess, grimaced. It was too late for regrets now, so he could only take Zeref and Mavis back to his residence.
After placing Mavis on the bed and covering her with a blanket, Jelf sat down on the edge of the bed.
Upon raising his eyes and meeting Sasuke's wary gaze, he couldn't help but smile and said, "Don't worry, I only asked you for a deal because I wanted to find a place to stay temporarily. Besides," Zeref said, tilting his head slightly and laughing, "even if I wanted to do something, could you stop me?"
Sasuke frowned. Although he was very unhappy with Zeref's contempt, judging from Zeref's ability to easily deceive the entire ninja village, the truth was probably as Zeref said.
Although proud, Sasuke wasn't stupid. He tilted his head, scoffed, and then asked curiously, "So, what are your and this guy named... Mavis's status in the eyes of the people of Konoha right now?"
Sasuke was indeed a little curious about this. Zeref looked several years older than him, while Mavis, who was lying in bed now, looked about the same age. But when they met Kakashi, Zeref also called him "Kakashi-sensei"? Sasuke couldn't help but want to find out.
Zeref got up and sat down at the table, explaining, "Since I got all my information about Konoha from you, just to be on the safe side, I set up Mavis and me as genin in your team. As for our ages, other people will just think that it took me several years to graduate."
"A five-person team?!" Sasuke was taken aback and said subconsciously, "Konoha has never had a five-person team before. This is too easy to expose, isn't it?"
“Under the effects of magic, anything amiss will be automatically overlooked. You just witnessed that, didn’t you?” Zeref said calmly. He then asked, “Are there any vacant houses around here? You can’t accommodate Mavis and me here, can you?”
Sasuke's house is clearly a single-person ninja apartment. Therefore, finding accommodation for Zeref and Mavis becomes the first problem to solve.
Sasuke glanced at his house, which was clearly only big enough for one person, rested his chin on his hand, and pondered, "The house next door seems to have been empty for a while..."
