Chapter 4 Check-in
Chapter 4 Check-in
So when Mavis finally woke up and sat up to look around, she saw two black-haired, black-eyed boys with a surprisingly similar style cleaning the house.
Mavis blinked, then involuntarily raised her hand to rub her eyes, wondering if she was still not fully awake, otherwise how could she have opened her eyes to see Zeref wiping the table with a rag?
Jeff had already sensed it when Mavis woke up and got up.
Having just broken ties with Mavis in the Fairy Tail guild, and now only due to unforeseen circumstances leading to their current predicament in the ninja world, Zeref was momentarily unsure how to approach Mavis, and thus hesitated for a while.
Meanwhile, Sasuke, who was sweeping the floor, also noticed that Mavis had woken up.
He glanced at Mavis, then at Zeref, who had inexplicably paused. Completely oblivious to Sasuke's subtle and complex emotions, he naively assumed Zeref hadn't noticed Mavis's awakening and bluntly called out, "Hey, Zeref, your comrade's awake."
Jelf: ...
The fingers gripping the rag twitched almost imperceptibly. Jelf slowly turned around, meeting Mavis's still somewhat bewildered gaze. He pursed his lips and said in a deliberately nonchalant tone, "You're awake. How are you feeling, Mavis?"
Upon hearing Jelf's voice, Mavis finally realized that what she was seeing was not an illusion.
She looked around at her unfamiliar surroundings with some hesitation, realizing that she was in an unfamiliar room with a simple bed beneath her.
Mavis hesitated for a moment, then threw back the covers and got out of bed. She found that the house she was in wasn't very big, but it had two rooms, and she had just been in one of them.
The living room, kitchen, and bathroom are all well-equipped, but it seems the house has been uninhabited for some time, as there is a thin layer of dust on the furniture.
Mavis glanced at the rag in Jelf's hand and the broom in his assistant's hand, and instantly understood why the two were cleaning.
The logic makes sense, but that's not the point. Mavis's gaze fell on Zeref, her eyes filled with complex emotions, and she said, "Zeref, what trick are you up to now?"
Saying something like "what kind of trick are you playing" is not a compliment.
Sasuke's gaze lingered hesitantly between Zeref and Mavis. When Zeref appeared, he was carrying Mavis in his arms, and he had been carefully taking care of the unconscious Mavis along the way. Sasuke naturally assumed that the two were comrades, but now it seemed that this was not the case.
Compared to Sasuke, Zeref's attitude towards Mavis was not surprising at all.
He put down the rag in his hand, smiled slightly at Sasuke, and said, "Sasuke, could you give us some time to talk alone?"
So they're going to exchange information behind his back? Sasuke understood. He put the broom in his hand by the door, glanced at the two people with the strange atmosphere and the subtle confrontation, and walked out, even considerately closing the door behind him.
Seeing the unfamiliar child beside Zeref leave, Mavis finally couldn't help but ask, "What exactly happened, Zeref? Shouldn't we be in Fairy Tail? What happened after that?"
Jelf reached for the water glass on the table. The glass contained warm water that Jelf had prepared in advance, anticipating when Mavis would wake up. Under Mavis's watchful gaze, Jelf handed the glass to her.
"Thank you...?" Looking at the warm water handed to her, Mavis blinked, hesitated for a moment but still subconsciously thanked her politely.
Feeling somewhat tired, Mavis picked up her water glass, took a couple of sips, and then heard Jelf's voice.
“We have probably arrived in another world, Mavis.”
"Cough, cough cough..." Mavis almost choked when she heard this. She hurriedly put down her water glass and tried to calm the cough in her chest. Her cheeks turned slightly red.
Jelf, who hadn't expected Mavis to be so agitated, hesitated for a moment before reaching out and patting Mavis on the back to help her recover as quickly as possible.
Having calmed down, Mavis sensed Zeref's movements, looked up at him with a complicated expression, and continued to ask, "What exactly happened..."
Jelf: "It's like this..."
With Zeref's explanation, Mavis finally understood the situation. She murmured worriedly, "I wonder how Fairy Tail is doing now, is the war still going on..."
The war. The culprit. Jerf remained silent.
Mavis wasn't asking Jelf when she said this; she rested her chin on her hand, lost in thought.
While he himself is unable to participate in the war to help his comrades, Zeref is also unable to participate in the war.
Zeref's new Eclipse Project was thus forced to a halt. This is probably why Zeref hasn't yet obtained the Fairy Heart.
Indeed, the moment Mavis woke up, she immediately realized that her magic was still intact.
The Fairy Heart and the Rift in Time are the most important parts of Zeref's New Eclipse Project. Now that neither of them is in Zeref's hands, Mavis feels a great sense of relief.
She looked at Zeref, unable to resist trying to persuade him further: "Zeref, give up your New Day Eclipse Project. Is it worth sacrificing the collapse of the entire world for your wish?"
Zeref's expression remained completely unmoved. His dark eyes stared at Mavis as he said, "I will create a better world. In that world, I will live happily with my family. There will be no Acnologia, and you won't have met me and been afflicted with the contradictory curse. Everything will be wonderful, won't it?"
Mavis stood up excitedly and retorted, "That's not how it works! Although the world has sadness and danger, it also has joy and hope. Most importantly, this world is one that everyone worked so hard to create together. How can you, one person, so easily decide to give up on it!"
Seeing the agitated Mavis, Jelf knew that neither of them could convince the other. He turned back to the table, picked up the rag again, and said calmly, "The most important thing now is how to get back to Asland, both for you and for me."
