Chapter 62 Searching, Crackdown, and Demolition of the Sanatorium
The lobby of the sanatorium was filled with the smell of disinfectant.
As soon as Li En stepped across the threshold, she saw a nurse standing next to the entrance of the corridor.
Her back was almost pressed against the wall, her hands clasped together in front of the nurse's uniform belt, her fingers twisting together.
Her eyes scanned back and forth between the alligator rifle on Li En's body, the grenades and spare magazines hanging from his waist, and the RPG rocket launcher on his back.
"Excuse me—is there anything I can help you with?"
"I'm an FBI agent. Can you take me to Gideon's office?"
Li En stood in the center of the hallway, without moving forward.
He held guns in both hands, an alligator in his right hand and an unlimited Glock in his left.
The muzzles of the guns were all pointing downwards, but the index fingers were resting on the outside of the trigger guard.
His waist was covered with grenades and spare magazines, and the nylon buckle of his tactical belt was pulled down by the weight.
The launch tube of the RPG rocket launcher on his back protruded slightly above his shoulder.
This outfit is something the nurse has never seen before in her life.
She tried to piece together a plausible image in her mind by combining the FBI and the fully armed man in front of her, but she couldn't.
"Mr. Gideon is not here."
She shrunk her shoulders slightly and rubbed her back against the wall.
"I know, that's why I need you to take me to his office."
Li En took two steps forward and stood in front of the nurse.
His shadow fell on her, enveloping her completely.
"please."
The nurse's body trembled slightly.
She turned around, took a step, and her steps were a little unsteady.
She led Li En through the corridor, pushing open door after door, and past an area filled with empty hospital beds.
The bed sheets were crumpled and piled at the foot of the beds, and several IV stands were still standing beside the beds with IV tubes hanging down.
The ward doors on both sides of the corridor were closed, and the observation windows on the doors were covered from the inside with newspapers, the edges of which were yellowed and curled.
"FBI officer, I haven't been working here long."
The nurse's voice was very low, as if she were confessing something she wasn't even sure if it constituted a crime.
She didn't turn around to look at Li En, but spoke to the increasingly dark corridor ahead.
"I'm just taking care of and documenting patients undergoing experimental treatments." She didn't actually know what Lee Eun was trying to do.
But no matter how you look at it, for such a terrifying-looking official to come knocking on Mr. Gideon's door, something serious must have happened.
She didn't want to be seen as an accomplice.
I know, you don't need to worry.
Li En shifted her gaze from the back of the nurse's head and glanced at the door at the end of the corridor marked "Operating Room".
The indicator light above the door frame was not lit, and a dim light shone through the crack in the door.
"You'd better leave here quickly after you lead the way."
The nurse's footsteps trembled slightly.
She didn't answer, but led Li En through the ward area and stopped in front of a door.
She pressed the doorknob with her still slightly trembling fingers, and the door sprang open.
In the center of the operating room stood a stainless steel operating table covered with disposable sterile drapes. Next to it was a tray rack full of surgical instruments, and in the corner was a human skeleton model.
Against the wall were several metal filing cabinets, with different colored labels on the cabinet doors.
"This is where Mr. Gideon usually works."
Li En turned her head, glanced at the nurse, and then stepped over the threshold into the operating room.
pat.
The door behind me was closed.
He took the weapon case out of the storage room, placed it on the operating table, and opened the lid.
Then I walked to the metal filing cabinets in the corner and pulled out each drawer one by one.
Take out all the folders, medical records, and experimental records inside and stuff them into the empty spaces in the weapon box.
The edge of the paper scraped against the metal box wall, making a very faint rubbing sound.
He closed the lid of the box, put it back in the warehouse, sat down next to the operating table, leaned against the wall, and rested the alligator on his knees.
Waiting quietly.
sizzle.
The loudspeaker above the ceiling crackled to life.
First came a few seconds of ear-piercing electrical whistling, then a female voice, somewhat muffled by distortion, came from the speaker.
"Alert 6! Alert 6! All staff, activate emergency plan—"
Li En stood up.
He came to the sanatorium to kill mutants and get a rating.
This building is quite large; searching through each ward one by one would be too slow.
Instead of searching everywhere, let them come to us on their own.
The alarm sounding indicates that the lockdown procedures at the nursing home have been activated.
All patients infected with the T-virus were released from their respective rooms.
The door was suddenly pushed open from the outside, slamming against the wall with a dull thud.
The nurse stood at the door, one hand bracing against the door frame, the other hand pressed against her chest, her chest heaving rapidly.
Her face was covered in sweat, her hair was stuck to her temples, and the collar of her nurse's uniform was pulled askew, revealing a small section of her collarbone.
Her pupils were constricted, and her lips were chapped.
"Sir! The patients here are all acting strangely all of a sudden. We need to leave immediately!"
As she ran over, she could hear something being knocked over in the corridor behind her, along with a hoarse growl coming from afar.
boom.
The alligator's gun barrel twitched.
The bullet flew past the nurse's ear and through the open doorway.
The bullet struck the center of the forehead of a man in a white coat walking towards her in the corridor behind her.
The bullet tore open the forehead, entered the cranial cavity, and exited from the back of the head.
The chainsaw in the man's hand was still spinning a few times after he fell to the ground, the chain scraping sparks on the tiled floor, before slowly coming to a stop as the engine shut off.
"ah!!!"
The nurse screamed and dodged several steps to the side, her back slamming against the wall inside the operating room door frame.
Her eyes were wide open, fixed on the corpse lying on the ground and the chainsaw that was rolling to the ground from between the loosened fingers.
She suddenly realized what had just happened.
The person in the white coat was walking towards her with a chainsaw, and she had no idea.
"teacher!"
"Let's go."
Li En walked around the operating table, stepped over the door frame, and stood in the corridor, glancing left and right.
The gunshot was very loud, and the alligator's recoil was very strong.
The patients who were originally lying in bed covered with sheets have all gotten out of bed and are dragging themselves from both ends of the corridor toward the middle, completely blocking the passage leading to the main entrance.
The sound of hands slapping wooden boards came from the small doors on both sides of the corridor, one after another, the rhythm getting faster and faster, and the hinges on the door frames trembled with each impact.
"I'll take you out."
He shielded the nurse behind him and walked down the corridor.
The alligator bounced in his hand, each shot hitting a gray-white head that was turning towards him.
The spent cartridges bounced out of the ejection port, landing on the moldy tile floor with a crisp tinkling sound, before rolling into the dust that had accumulated in the corner for who knows how long.
At the end of the corridor was a window, its glass clear from the rain outside, with rainwater running down its surface.
Li En smashed the window with the butt of his gun and swept away the remaining glass from the frame.
"Leave here."
The nurse gripped the edge of the windowsill with her still trembling fingers and climbed over the window frame.
She turned around and shouted something towards the window.
She probably said thank you, and then ran into the darkness without looking back.
Li En turned and walked back into the operating room.
The knocking sounds from behind the small doors in the corridor continued.
He walked to the door, aimed at the door panel, and fired two shots. The bullets blasted two small holes in the wooden board.
Then he raised his right foot and kicked the center of the door, sending the entire door flying inwards.
A mutant wearing a white coat was standing behind the door. It opened its mouth and lunged at him, a long trail of slime stretching between its teeth.
Bang, bang.
Two bullets pierced its skull.
The body fell backward, crashing into the medicine cabinet in the room. The glass cabinet door shattered, and several bottles of medicine rolled off the shelf and onto the floor, scattering pills everywhere.
Li En stepped over the corpse and searched through the filing cabinets in the room.
All the experimental records and medical records were stuffed into the weapon box.
Then he went back into the hallway, and Sherry's voice came through his headphones.
"Leon, Grace has woken up. She said she wanted to investigate her mother's affairs, but she was knocked unconscious."
"Understood. Tell her to wait patiently. I'll continue the search at the nursing home."
"If there is any news about her mother, we will tell her in person."
Li En ejected the Alligator's magazine and checked the ammunition level.
After clearing out the mutants here, we still need to take Grace to the Ark to make the antidote.
Let's try to calm her down first.
"Okay, let's keep in touch."
Li En advanced along the corridor toward the second floor, clearing out several mutants that rushed out of the wards along the way, and quickly finished searching the first floor.
He had just stepped onto the stairs leading to the second floor when a tall, thin figure in white appeared at the corner of the stairs.
She was wearing a white dress that had turned gray, the hem trailing on the steps, the fabric stained with dark brown, dried blood.
He was at least two meters tall, with a hunched back, shoulders that slumped forward, and two extremely long arms that hung down from his shoulders, his fingers almost touching the ground.
There were only a few strands of white hair on his head, and his scalp was covered with grayish-brown lividity.
The lips were completely rotten, revealing the receding gums and a set of uneven teeth underneath.
"Awooo!!" She opened her mouth and let out a sharp, long roar from deep in her throat.
The air exhaled from his mouth carried a foul stench of rotting protein.
Bang, bang.
Two bullets flew out of the Alligator's gun and hit her knees.
The bullet tore through the already rotting skin, shattered the cartilage and ligaments beneath the patella, and fragments of bone ejected from the bullet hole, embedding themselves in the water on the stair steps behind her.
Her legs lost their support at the same time, and her huge body crashed to her knees on the stair steps, her kneecaps hitting the terrazzo surface and creating two small dents.
She raised her head, opened her mouth, and let out a second roar.
In Li En's view, there were no red weakness marks on this body.
She was enveloped in a faint red glow.
The T-virus transformed her entire body into a self-regenerating unit, so she wouldn't truly die even if her skull was pierced.
Li En took an incendiary grenade from his waist, pressed down the safety plate with his thumb, hooked the pin with his index finger, and threw it into the wide-open mouth of the white-skirted monster.
The projectile bounced in the mouth, hit the back molars, and rolled into the throat.
Boom!
A violent burst of orange-yellow flame erupted simultaneously from her mouth and nostrils.
The flames pierced through her gums, which were unprotected by her lips, and spread upwards along her rotting cheekbone, engulfing her entire head in seconds.
The flames continued to engulf her, burning her stained white dress to a charred black.
The fabric shrank and curled under the high temperature, eventually turning into a layer of black ash that stuck to her skin.
The fat melted, boiled, and seeped out from the cracks in the skin in the flames.
It was reignited the moment it came into contact with cold air, burning into a thick cloud of black smoke.
A stench, a mixture of rotting protein and burnt flesh, permeated the entire stairwell, so strong it brought tears to one's eyes immediately.
The white-dressed monster's roar gradually subsided amidst the flames.
But on the charred floor, the body, already burned to a crisp, was still twitching slightly.
Li En took a second incendiary grenade from his waist, pulled the pin, and threw it at the convulsing body.
The second burst of flame exploded, turning the entire stairwell corner into a sea of orange-yellow fire.
After the flames died down, the red light that had enveloped the female monster completely disappeared from his sight.
The weakness effect brought by the title of "Biochemical Expert" has finally disappeared.
The death has been confirmed.
"Lyon, is it convenient for you? I got the floor plan of the sanatorium and sent it to you."
Shirley's voice came through the earphones, her tone much steadyer than before.
Li En took out his phone, and on the screen was a detailed architectural floor plan, with his current location marked by a red dot.
There are also several yellow markers nearby, indicating several unsearched areas.
He swiped his thumb across the screen to zoom in on the map, which was very convenient.
"Lyon, what's in that sanatorium—"
"It's the same old thing: virus research."
Li En continued walking forward, stepping on the charred remains of the white-dressed monster, her shoes crushing a thick layer of black ash.
"Don't worry, I'll take care of it. Stay in touch."
He swept away the mutants along both sides of the second-floor corridor, casually looting documents from the filing cabinets and medicines from the medicine cabinets.
Li En demonstrated the essence of the search and interrogation to the fullest extent, and soon arrived at Victor's office.
A desktop computer, still running, was lying on the desk, its cursor flashing on and off in a password input box.
"I'm at the office. There's a computer here."
"Okay, just lock the computer. I'll start working on it now." The sound of typing on Shirley's keyboard suddenly intensified, becoming a continuous clatter.
Li En randomly entered three numbers into the password box.
A bright red warning window popped up on the screen—too many incorrect password attempts, the system has been locked.
The network connection icon in the upper right corner of the screen flashes, and a remote IP address appears in the status bar at the bottom of the screen.
"Bingo, I see it, the IP address is there too, give me a little time."
The sound of keyboard typing lasted for a few seconds, then suddenly stopped.
"They're inside."
There was silence in the headphones for a long time.
Shirley stared at the file directory on the screen without saying a word.
Lee Eun could hear that her breathing rhythm had changed.
The steady flow turned into deeper and slower fluctuations.
"I found some information." Her voice was much softer.
"It says that our symptoms are caused by T-virus infection, as are those of the survivors."
"Don't worry, I'll handle it."
There was a brief silence in the headphones.
"Yes, I believe you."
Li En pulled out all the experimental records, research notes, and communication files from Victor's desk drawer and stacked them together.
He then put the rifle next to him, along with several fully loaded magazines, into the weapon case.
Then I opened the computer case, removed the hard drive, and put it inside along with the files.
"I still have to go save someone."
"Save people?" Shirley asked, somewhat puzzled.
Without explaining, Li En ransacked the office, taking everything worthwhile, and headed towards the basement following the route marked on the floor plan.
The main power supply to the basement was deliberately cut off.
All the switches in the power distribution room were turned off, and the plugs of the three main cables were pulled off the distribution panel and thrown on the ground. There were marks on the edges of the plugs indicating that they had been roughly clamped with pliers.
Li En spent some time finding the socket again, plugging the cables back in one by one, and then turning on the power switch.
The row of fluorescent lights on the ceiling of the power distribution room flickered a few times, and then they all lit up.
He used the restored power to open an iron gate.
Behind the door was a small room, and a girl was curled up on the bed.
She heard the door open and looked up towards the doorway.
The direction of the eyes is correct, but the pupils are dilated, and the surface of the eyeballs is covered with a grayish-white film.
"Who?" She pulled her hand out from under the covers and groped around the edge of the bed, her fingers touching the cold iron bars.
"I'm a police officer, I'm here to rescue you."
Li En walked over, squatted down by the bed, and spoke very softly.
Emily, Victor's experimental subject, was kept in the basement to cultivate antibodies against the T-virus variant.
"And I will cure your illness as well."
Emily's hand froze in mid-air.
Her lips were trembling slightly as she tried to process the voice that had suddenly appeared in the darkness.
A hand gently took her hand.
That hand was warm and large, and the force with which it closed was just right, enough for her to feel that she wasn't being let go.
"There won't be any problems."
Emily pursed her lips and then nodded.
Li En lifted the girl off the bed with one hand and let her sit on his left forearm.
She was so light that you could feel her ribs rising and falling with her breath through her tactical vest, beneath a thin layer of skin.
Li En took one high-explosive grenade and one incendiary grenade from his waist with his right hand and threw them into the depths of the basement corridor.
Finally, he threw a timed grenade on the ground, then turned around and ran as fast as he could towards the stairs leading to the ground.
Rumble!
One violent explosion after another erupted behind him, and the flames of incendiary grenades surged out from the basement corridor.
The flames spread upwards along the cables in the electrical substation, burning through the entire sanatorium's main power supply system within seconds.
All the fluorescent lights inside the building went out at the same instant, and then, one by one, the windows on the second and third floors shattered from the inside out.
Orange-yellow flames licked out of the window, igniting the ivy vines on the exterior wall into a burning net.
Li En carried Emily out of the main gate, crossed the gravel square in front of the sanatorium which was already illuminated by firelight, and ran all the way to the Porsche Cayenne parked by the roadside.
He gently placed Emily in the passenger seat and helped her fasten her seatbelt.
The girl turned her head, her eyes, unable to see anything, slightly tilted towards the firelight outside the car window, her face showing no fear.
Li En walked around to the other side, got into the driver's seat, and turned the key.
