Chapter 6 Attack
Chapter 6 Attack
Lezhi instantly realized that danger was approaching. He quickly turned around and looked up in the direction of Maoqiu's gaze, but all he saw was dense vegetation and nothing else of note.
The enemy's disguise could only fool Lezhi, a jungle novice. As a local bird, Maoqiu could discern the enemy's general information, the number of attackers, and their hiding places from the information carried by the wind. Maoqiu knew it all.
The previously peaceful atmosphere was now on the verge of exploding. Lezhi nervously swallowed, slowly shifting his body to a more convenient escape position. He was a novice, so he knew his limitations. Even though Maoqiu, the local bird, was so obviously on guard, it didn't stop him from following suit, even if he hadn't noticed anything yet.
As it turned out, Lezhi's idea was correct. Not long after he adjusted his posture, a long antenna emerged from the patch of grass that Maoqiu had been staring at.
The color of its antennae was very similar to that of the grass, and if it weren't for its strange movement pattern, Lezhi would have no way of distinguishing it.
Upon seeing the enemy appear, Maoqiu immediately flapped its wings and flew to Lezhi's side, its wings slightly open, ready to meet the enemy.
The enemy's form quickly became visible; it was a completely green insect. This color naturally provided a camouflage advantage in the jungle, but now that it had been discovered, there was no point in continuing to hide. The insect slowly emerged from the grass and stopped not far from the fur ball.
The fluffy ball was now close to bursting out, its wings spread wider, confronting the insect. Meanwhile, Lezhi, protected behind it, was also feeling uneasy.
He looked at the large green worm, searching his memory for similar insects, and finally determined that the insect that looked most like this thing was a locust.
Having identified the insect's species, Lezhi inwardly groaned, because the large insect was clearly aimed at him. He could clearly feel the insect's inorganic compound eyes scrutinizing him from head to toe, causing Lezhi to involuntarily tense up.
The fluffy ball also noticed that the insect seemed to be eyeing Lezhi, and became unusually angry. With a few threatening flaps of its already unfolded wings, the fluffy ball approached the insect, demonstrating with its actions that its opponent was here.
The bug was successfully threatened by the fur ball's movements, and its attention finally left Lezhi. Seeing the fur ball approaching, the bug tactically changed its position, retreating to a more concealed patch of grass, where it lurked menacingly.
The insect's act of showing weakness did not ease the furball's tension; instead, it made it even angrier.
Although the furball was tiny compared to the insect's enormous size, it exuded an aura of 2.8 meters from the very beginning. The insect did not seem to underestimate the furball and remained cautious throughout.
Seeing that the furry ball wasn't fooled by its feigned weakness and was instead closing in step by step, the insect had no choice but to fight back.
A major battle was about to break out. Before Lezhi could react, Maoqiu had already fought a round with the insect that looked like a locust.
Seemingly injured by the furball, the insect hissed and recoiled. The furball pressed its advantage, launching another attack at the opportune moment, striking the insect squarely and knocking it to the ground.
Struggling to its feet, the insect dared not fight back directly. It used its last move, spreading its transparent wings that it had been hiding behind its back. The insect quickly took off and moved away from the fur ball's attack range.
Unfortunately, it wasn't the only one present that could fly. Seeing the insect take off and try to escape the battlefield, the fluffy ball let out a clear, sharp "Hee~" and quickly spread its wings and took flight, looking ready to give chase.
The aerial battle was a foregone conclusion. Lezhi looked up and watched as the giant insect was knocked down in one round by the fur ball, which had become even stronger after being lifted into the air. The insect crashed heavily to the ground. It was not yet dead. Its legs, as thin as grass twigs, were still struggling and trying to straighten its body.
The fluffy ball didn't give it a chance; it shot down from the sky and delivered the final blow to the insect.
Having dealt with the bug, Maoqiu stood atop its prize and barked triumphantly at Lezhi, who had been watching from afar.
Hearing Maoqiu's call, Lezhi quickly went over, "Maoqiu, are you alright!"
"Chirp~ Chirp chirp~"
Seemingly understanding that Lezhi was concerned about it, Maoqiu puffed out its fluffy chest, striking an invincible pose, and even jumped a few times on the insect's head to show that it was perfectly fine. The one who was truly in trouble was the insect that had come to provoke it for no reason.
Seeing that Maoqiu was still so lively, Lezhi began to observe the insect. Once he got closer, Lezhi realized that insects in this world were truly enormous. This insect was almost twice his own length, and its head was bigger than a bucket. Even though the behemoth before him was no longer a threat, Lezhi still felt a chill run down his spine at the sight of this colossal creature.
Unaware of Lezhi's fear, Maoqiu began to enjoy its spoils. Finding a suitable spot, Maoqiu easily tore open the insect's abdominal skin, revealing the tender white flesh inside.
With its sharp beak, it pecked up a piece and swallowed it, chirping happily twice, seemingly very satisfied with the taste of the food. After enjoying the delicious food, the furry ball didn't forget Lezhi, turning its head and barking twice at Lezhi, urging him to eat as well.
Lezhi, who had just been gripped by fear, had his terror largely dissipated after Maoqiu's antics, and he became curious about the taste of insects. In his previous life, he lived in a country with a thriving culinary culture, where people ate almost anything, including insects.
Although I haven't tried it myself, I've heard that insect meat, if cooked properly, tastes delicious and is very nutritious, being high in protein and energy.
No matter how terrifying a monster is, it becomes less frightening when it also serves as food. Lezhi stepped forward with great interest, but instead of immediately taking a bite, he first examined the texture of the insect's flesh.
Comparing it to her memory, Lezhi discovered that the worm meat was white, tender, and firm, looking very much like the meat of some shellfish, but she didn't know what it tasted like.
Maoqiu has a say in this matter. Having been enjoying his meal for a long time, Maoqiu saw that Lezhi was just watching without eating and assumed that he wouldn't eat. So, the concerned Maoqiu quickly pecked up a piece of tender meat, flew to Lezhi's shoulder, and brought his mouth close to Lezhi, gesturing for him to eat.
Lezhi felt a pang of tenderness as the furball fed him, but he was also somewhat amused and exasperated. He raised his hand to push away the furball's enthusiastic offer, and looking at the furball's puzzled expression, he explained softly, "Thank you, furball. You eat this yourself. Let me think of a way to cook it over a fire first."
From Lezhi's actions and tone, Maoqiu sensed his refusal and ate the food in his mouth with some frustration. Maoqiu was puzzled. Wasn't this fragrant two-legged beast hungry? How could a beast refuse to be fed?
Seeing the confusion and frustration on Maoqiu's face, Lezhi smiled helplessly. There was nothing he could do; Maoqiu simply couldn't accept raw food immediately. Anyway, he wasn't very hungry yet, so he had to struggle a bit, otherwise he'd really turn into a caveman.
Having made up his mind, Lezhi turned around and began collecting dry plant branches and hay nearby. Maoqiu watched Lezhi's actions for a while, and after understanding what he wanted, it also helped him pick up the hay.
