Chapter 4 First Steps into Another World (4)
Mu Shaoying lay on a recliner under a tree in the yard, leisurely swinging her legs. The sun was shining brightly, and she seemed to be living the retirement life she had always dreamed of.
After an unknown amount of time, Mu Shaoying opened her eyes and saw two figures, one tall and one short, not far away. Mu Shaoying rubbed her eyes to clear her mind and habitually squinted at the two figures.
The taller one was a woman, dressed in blue, with her hair styled as if it had been treated with oil, neatly combed back. The other was a little boy about the same age as the original owner, with his hair tied in a bun.
The two had been kneeling for an unknown amount of time. The woman would occasionally glare at the little boy who was peeking at Mu Shaoying. Presumably, these two were Granny Liao and Zhu Zi.
Not knowing how the original owner would handle this situation, Mu Shaoying quickly told Liao Mama and Zhuzi to get up after seeing the two kneeling people.
Unexpectedly, Granny Liao pulled on the pillar and kowtowed deeply to Mu Shaoying, then said, "Young Master, is your health improving? I failed to take good care of you, please punish me."
Granny Liao tugged at Zhu Zi's clothes, and Zhu Zi hurriedly chimed in, "Please punish me, young master."
Mu Shaoying was startled when she saw the two women kowtowing. She thought to herself, "This is going to shorten my lifespan!" She quickly got up from her chair, pulled Liao Mama and Zhu Zi up, and said, "Liao Mama and Zhu Zi have been taking care of me. I've been very worried about you these past few days."
Granny Liao quickly waved her hand: "Young Master, you flatter me. It is my duty to take care of you. I cannot accept your concern."
Seeing this, Mu Shaoying didn't say anything more and changed the subject to going to school tomorrow: "Granny Liao, my uncle told me to go to the school tomorrow."
Upon hearing this, Granny Liao said to Zhu Zi, "Zhu Zi, go and pack up the young master's books, then go and ask Steward Tao to arrange the carriage for the young master to go to school tomorrow, and to have the kitchen prepare the young master's favorite snacks."
After listening to what Granny Liao said, Zhu Zi nodded, glanced at Mu Shaoying, and ran out of the courtyard in a flash.
Mu Shaoying wanted to look at some books to avoid being clueless at school tomorrow, so she called out to Zhu Zi's back, "Zhu Zi, bring me two books."
Granny Liao looked at the pillar's back and said, "You're becoming more and more unruly. You don't even greet the young master before leaving. I'll see how I deal with you later."
After saying that, she helped Mu Shaoying sit back down in his chair and said with tears in her eyes, "Young Master, you've suffered. It's my fault for not taking good care of you. You've lost weight these past few days. How did Xiaoya take care of you, leaving you all alone here with no one to serve you? It's cold and windy. You've just recovered, so go back inside and don't catch a cold or develop a chronic illness."
Mu Shaoying pulled Liao Mama down to sit, saying, "I'm fine. It's Liao Mama and Zhuzi who have been implicated because of me. Xiaoya has taken good care of me, so Liao Mama doesn't need to worry."
Upon hearing this, Granny Liao burst into tears. Granny Liao looked to be about the same age as the mother in Mu Shaoying's memory, and seeing her cry, Mu Shaoying was flustered and at a loss for what to do.
Granny Liao held Mu Shaoying's hand and said, "Young Master has become much more sensible. I heard from Steward Tao that you were coming to see me and Zhuzi and even had a meal with Master. I didn't believe it, but seeing you today, Young Master has indeed grown up. Granny is so happy."
After listening to what Granny Liao said, Mu Shaoying recalled the looks her uncle and Steward Tao had given her a few days ago. She realized that her acting was indeed terrible and that she was different from the original owner of the body. Oh well, she might as well give up.
Mu Shaoying thought to himself with a self-deprecating smile that even if he sensed something was different and was considered to have been possessed or had his body stolen, he could only lie there and there was nothing he could do.
Time passed amidst Granny Liao's constant concern. Zhu Zi brought two books for tomorrow's school, but they had disappeared again. Little Ya was nowhere to be found either, or perhaps she had been transferred back to the kitchen.
Still worried, Granny Liao went to the kitchen and brought out a plate of snacks. After instructing Mu Shaoying to be careful, she went to prepare Mu Shaoying's things for school the next day.
After Granny Liao left, Mu Shaoying took the two books that Zhu Zi had brought her, flipped through them, and was dumbfounded. The characters on them were traditional Chinese characters, most of which she did not recognize, but a few looked familiar.
Mu Shaoying was at her wit's end. She thought about how she'd graduated from university and now she was illiterate. Her handwriting was usually quite neat, but when she switched to a calligraphy brush, oh dear, her writing was barely legible! She suddenly felt utterly hopeless; it was too difficult!
What am I going to do to go to class tomorrow? *crying*
