Chapter 423 Member of Parliament
when!
hum!
The music, with its soothing rhythm yet grand narrative, reached François's ears.
He was very surprised, wondering what kind of instrument could produce such soul-stirring music.
It was high-pitched and deafening!
It came from all directions of the huge hall.
This is a spectacular room with all sorts of furnishings, depicting many patterns that François could not understand.
Some of these structures clearly had peculiar uses, but François was unaware of their purpose.
Only directly in front of them, amidst the enormous furnishings, sat a thin person.
The man's hair was grayish-white, indicating that he was quite old.
With his back to François and the others, he held his hands out in front of him, either writing or operating some kind of device.
François had already experienced too many shocks on his way to the city of Parliament.
At this moment, he understood perfectly well that seeing any strange equipment here was nothing to be surprised about.
Perhaps it's related to clockwork again?
Strangely enough, after entering the Parliament Hall, François noticed a significant decrease in the number of gear structures he saw.
Is this a historically significant building, and the people here intend to maintain its solemnity and preserve its retro charm?
Or perhaps the clockwork was hidden somewhere François couldn't see it.
The clerk led François and Rand behind the man.
Only then did François realize what the man was doing.
The man's index finger moved incessantly, pressing the black and white keys in front of him.
But what kind of device is that?
Just as François was puzzled, the clerk came up behind the man.
"Your Excellency, the two alchemists have been brought here."
The senator's hands suddenly stopped, and with them, the magnificent music that had been lingering in François's ears also ceased. Only then did François realize that the enormous device was a musical instrument!
He glanced at the device and moved his gaze.
It was then discovered that it was connected to several rows of brass pipes that basically surrounded the hall.
The councilor stood up and faced the two men.
His skin was somewhat loose, and he looked to be about fifty years old. He had a kind face with a slight smile on his lips.
"I'm very sorry, you two. I didn't notice you. I love music, and once I start playing, I become quite immersed, even to the point of losing myself. You don't know, but I was originally a graduate of the Moon Palace Music School. I only chose to go into politics by chance. And the pipe organ is simply the greatest invention in the world. Its tone is soft and delicate, yet magnificent and grand, and its playing style is equally elegant."
"Your Excellency, I believe that the clockwork mechanism is the greatest invention," the clerk argued.
"You're still too obsessed with clockwork, Officer Ekko. You should listen to more music; it can elevate your soul," the senator said with a look of pity.
"Music can't bring salt and bread, nor can it stop swords and iron cavalry," said Agent Ike. "But clockwork technology could bring about a technological revolution."
"Maybe you're right, but can't you just give in to this old man? Music is my only hobby!"
The senator gave him a reproachful look before turning back to François and Rand. "Sorry to have made you laugh. I am Harry Zord, one of the federal senators."
Rand immediately bowed and introduced himself, and François quickly followed suit.
"I've heard of your achievements," Harry said. "A perfect alchemical elixir! It's said to be a problem that has stumped countless alchemists for tens of thousands of years. I never imagined that you two would actually overcome it!"
"Thanks to the federal government's positive policies toward academia and research, we academics have the opportunity to explore the truth," Rand responded.
François was surprised to learn that Mr. Rand was such a good talker.
"Knowledge is power, and this statement becomes even more valuable as more and more technologies are discovered," Harry said with a smile. "And Parliament City is a paradise for scholars."
"The city of Parliament has changed dramatically since I came here ten years ago," Rand said. "It seems the Federation has made some technological breakthroughs."
"Yes, originally this world wouldn't have changed much even after a thousand years, but since the advent of clockwork technology, Council City has been able to change every ten years, ha, even less!"
Rand nodded. "So, Your Excellency, what is the purpose of summoning us here? How can we be of service to you?"
“Since you’ve asked, I won’t keep you in suspense any longer,” Harry said. “In fact, I need you to become the council’s special alchemists.”
"And the reason?" Rand asked.
"This is a promising technology, and Parliament must take the lead and achieve greater results, to put it bluntly, to the point of being able to 'monopolize' it,"
The senator's amiable expression vanished, replaced by seriousness and indifference. "Only in this way can the Federation grow stronger step by step, and our position become unshakeable. If the Federation ceases to exist, then you scholars will absolutely be unable to devote yourselves to research."
"But they didn't keep us around either," Rand frowned. "I can tell it's ostensibly employment, but in reality, it's house arrest."
“Don’t say that, sir. I will not restrict your freedom,” Harry said. “And if I had to say, I do have two more reasons.”
Which two?
"One reason is the fear that your technology will be leaked."
Then Harry suddenly changed the subject, "Gentlemen, I specifically asked Ike to greet you so that you could see and understand the clockwork technology."
"It is indeed a groundbreaking technology; it is enough to change the times!" Rand concluded.
"That's true, but don't you two find it strange that you hadn't learned about such excellent technology before?"
François was also puzzled by Harry's remarks.
This technology should spread very quickly!
Harry immediately said, "That's precisely because Parliament City is sealing off technology. Only by staying in Parliament City can your technology remain secure."
Rand nodded: "And the second point?"
"Continued research requires focus, and even more so, funding. Staying in Parliament City, the Parliament and the Federation will be your support."
This point certainly convinced Rand, François was willing to bet on it, after all, it was precisely because of this that Rand chose to bring François to the City of Parliament.
However, Rand said:
"Then I also have two requests."
“Speak,” Harry frowned.
"I need all members of my alchemy group to be funded," Rand said.
Harry nodded: "No problem. In fact, your members have already been under my control for a long time."
"Furthermore, I need to have the right to conduct independent research."
Harry laughed: "Don't worry, we never interfere too much."
Rand smiled as well: "Then, Your Excellency, is there anything we can do for you right now?"
