Chapter 20 Leonard: What the hell?
Chapter 20 Leonard: What the hell?
Let's turn our attention back to Lorne.
"This tone sounds like someone from an official position!"
I can't let people see my face directly, I need to find something to cover it up... Lorne pondered what he could do to conceal his appearance.
Oh, and a monocle! It's small, but it does cover up to some extent and doesn't look too out of place.
Lorne quickly put the monocle made of crystal on his right eye.
"Run away? No, if we just leave, we'll be giving ourselves away." Hearing the footsteps getting closer and closer behind him.
No, I need to stay calm and not give myself away.
He probably can't tell that I'm a time traveler.
Moreover, although I am a time traveler, I have never done anything bad, so I have nothing to be ashamed of.
"That's right, you have to use a smile."
"Just greet them with a smile and give an explanation."
Having made up his mind, Lorne forced a smile and turned his head to reveal a strained grin.
Perhaps because the smile was forced, Lorne's smile appeared quite exaggerated.
……
Leonard, who was approaching from behind, was about to pat the man on the shoulder when he saw the man turn around on his own.
At the same time, I saw a smile on the face of the person wearing a monocle.
A smile that looked quite pleased.
!!!
By the dim light of the gas lamp, Lorne could make out the appearance of the person who had come.
Black hair, green eyes, quite good-looking, and most importantly, Lorne recognized him as one of the police officers he had encountered while eating at a restaurant on Zorant Street.
Because he recited a particularly awful poem, Lorne was deeply impressed by him.
Lorne took the initiative to walk over and explain why he was still on this street so late.
He simply wanted to appease the policeman. He noticed that the policeman hadn't even buttoned up his uniform and had such a suave demeanor, so he figured the policeman was probably unreliable.
With that thought in mind, Lorne's smile grew even brighter as he walked forward step by step.
However, to Lorne's surprise, the young policeman stared at him with a look of utter astonishment, as if he had seen a ghost.
"Don't...don't move!" He yanked his pistol out of its holster with his left hand, his index finger gripping the trigger tightly. His Adam's apple bobbed violently, accompanied by a swallowing sound.
"What... what's going on?" Lorne was startled by his actions and couldn't figure out why the other person was reacting so strongly.
Lorne took half a step forward to explain, only to see the young policeman's Adam's apple bob slightly as he muttered "monster."
He then ran wildly in the opposite direction without looking back. In the middle of the night, the sound of his footsteps and breathing mingled together, sounding particularly jarring. In the blink of an eye, the policeman disappeared around the street corner, leaving Lorne alone, bewildered in the wind.
The flame in the streetlight crackled twice, and the shadow at my feet twisted into strange shapes.
Why is this guy running away?
"Is there poop on my face?"
"Although we just came out of the cave and haven't had time to tidy up yet, so it's probably a bit messy, but it shouldn't be that scary."
"The police in this world are really not very competent!"
"No wonder the time travel guide says that official sources are unreliable; this might be one of the reasons."
Lorne sighed as he recalled the policeman's reaction.
"Huh? Why do I feel this familiar sense of relaxation again?"
"And it feels like something is about to vanish just before it's gone..."
Lorne stood there, bewildered by the strange reaction his body was producing.
……
……
On the other side, Leonard was running in the darkness, and he ran for a whole block before gradually slowing down.
"Huff...huff...huff..."
"Old man, really? Was that really the one you said was chasing you all along...?"
……
"You say you can't see through him!"
"Why are they hunting down Aurora Society members? Why is this happening?"
……
"A clone? You mean that person just now was actually a clone of some being?"
……
"What! You're saying that might have been the real thing?!"
"Is it because you can't see through his true nature?"
……
"Calm down... I'm very calm!" Leonard said stubbornly. As someone who had experienced a miraculous encounter and believed himself to be the protagonist of the era, this was the first time he had encountered such a disheveled situation.
"I know I'll act like nothing happened."
"Why did you say to be careful with your monocle?"
Seeing that the old man didn't say anything more, Leonard also fell silent.
……
"That policeman was a bit strange. He clearly called me first, but then he ran away first."
Lorne later followed his intuition and successfully found his way back to the Azure Hotel, eventually returning to his room in the early hours of the morning.
After taking a shower myself and then giving Laki a shower, the two of them lay on the bed.
"Meow~" Laki let out a lazy meow and then fell silent, as if she had fallen asleep.
Lorne held the cat in his arms, petting it while reviewing the day's events.
"If that policeman wasn't afraid of me, then..."
"The monocle I'm wearing is that one on my face."
"But is there anything special about these glasses?" Lorne picked up the monocle from the bedside table, which was in a wooden box, and examined it carefully in the dim light.
"I feel fine. Could it be that I look ugly or scary when I wear it?" Lorne asked uncertainly.
"They say there's something wrong with this thing, but how do you verify that? Divination?" Lorne muttered to himself.
"What's wrong!"
Suddenly, Lorne felt much more tired, and some of his spiritual energy had been depleted.
"What?" The wooden box in his hand suddenly began to tremble strangely.
After a few seconds, the lid of the wooden box suddenly opened by itself, and a note appeared out of nowhere inside.
"This is?"
Out of caution, Lorne did not take out the note directly, but instead leaned closer to look at it.
The note read:
"Just cover it with your spirit."
"Spiritual covering? Could it mean covering this monocle with spiritual energy?"
Lorne got out of bed and carefully placed the wooden box on the desk.
"This wooden box doesn't look like an ordinary antique; it's probably an extraordinary item."
"Why don't we give it a try?" Lorne had an idea, remembering the note in the box.
"Never mind, let's do a divination first."
As he spoke, Lorne took off his pendulum, intending to start a new round of divination, and began to perform a divination again.
"This monocle poses a danger to me."
After about ten seconds, the blue crystal pendulum rotated slightly counterclockwise, representing negation.
"The divination result is fine."
"My spiritual intuition isn't responding either, should I give it a try?"
As spiritual energy slowly flowed in, Lorne felt his fatigue intensify.
"The fact that it can be infused with spirituality shows that it is indeed extraordinary."
"But you can't really tell anything just by looking at it."
After hesitating for a moment, Lorne put the monocle on his right eye.
