Chapter 264 Saved Her Again
Chapter 264 Saved Her Again
She knew the army outside had retreated, but she wasn't curious about why. She just wanted to stay in Gu Chang'an's arms a little longer.
It turns out that ordinary days are the most precious, otherwise, unexpected changes will only lead to regret.
"Husband, do you know? I went back to see Old Man Zou this time." She remembered this and smiled to herself, adding, "I haven't had a chance to tell you yet."
Gu Chang'an was reluctant to close his eyes, so he watched her mouth open and close, listening to her voice.
He then felt that he was the happiest person in the world.
Ah Li is right. They can't stay in the court forever; they need to have their own lives.
"What did he say?" he asked, his voice extremely gentle.
"He said..." Shen Li was about to speak when her ears twitched. She quickly stood up and shouted towards the outside of the cave, "Not good, be on guard!"
There seemed to be a few gusts of wind sweeping past outside the cave, followed by the sounds of clashing weapons and screams.
“There are experts who know light-body skills. They’ve really gone all out this time. Husband, don’t move. I’m going out to take a look.” Shen Li said, already standing up.
However, as soon as she got up, she felt dizzy and weak in the legs, and immediately fell back down, followed by a long gasp.
Gu Chang'an noticed that her forehead was already covered in cold sweat.
"Don't worry, Ah Li, we might still have our own methods." Gu Chang'an supported her, while his other hand gripped the musket beside him.
The entrance to the cave is narrow, allowing only one person to pass at a time; even a skilled fighter might not be able to withstand the musket fire.
Shen Li had no choice but to agree. As soon as she moved, her body went weak again. She wanted to hear what was happening outside, but all she could do was feel ringing in her ears. In the end, she resigned herself to lying down.
It turns out that the feeling of despair is so intense when those who rely on force lose it; I suppose power must feel the same way.
It seemed like a fight had been going on outside for a while, but Shen Li didn't know how long. She only saw a man in black enter the cave, and when he faced the muskets, he took off his black mask, revealing a familiar, devilishly handsome face that looked even more alluring and seductive in the firelight.
Shen Li fainted again at some point. When she woke up, she found herself lying in a soft place, warm as if covered by a blanket, with low sobbing sounds coming from beside her.
When she opened her eyes, she saw Peony sitting by the bed. The little girl was wiping away tears, and her eyes were red from crying.
Peony noticed the movement and immediately looked up. Seeing her young mistress open her eyes, she was overjoyed: "Miss, you're awake? Are you feeling unwell? Should we call a doctor?"
"Water," Shen Li said.
Lian Qiao had just returned from outside and, upon hearing the words, brought the water to the bedside. The two sisters helped Shen Li drink it.
"Where is my husband?" Shen Li asked.
“Miss, there’s no need to worry. The master is recuperating in the room next to you. General Lin said that it’s not appropriate for you and the master to share a room while you are both injured.” Lian Qiao replied, “I just came from the master’s room. His fever has gone down.”
"General Lin?" Shen Li slightly raised her eyes: "Wan'er?"
"It is indeed Miss Wan'er. His Majesty has dispatched the main forces of three major battalions to rescue us. Wan'er led the troops here, and all the rebels have been suppressed."
Shen Li understood and wasn't surprised. She and Gu Chang'an had stalled for a day, and the reinforcements should have arrived by now.
"These people are incredibly audacious to actually stop us. If we had known they were planning a rebellion, we would have come even if it meant killing them." Peony was still sniffling.
"Don't cry, everything's alright." Shen Li comforted Shaoyao, and then carefully inquired whether the servants and soldiers outside the cave that day were safe, and whether the survivors of the landslide had received medical treatment.
She felt a pang of pain upon learning that some of the guards had been killed by a master, for not everyone survived.
"Miss, that Taoist priest's martial arts are simply unfathomable. He was injured, yet he managed to kill more than twenty martial arts masters with just two girls, and he wasn't even hurt," Peony inquired.
Shen Li remembered seeing Bai Wuyou before she fainted. She never expected that this adopted holy son would work so hard for her, actually coming all the way from the capital, even faster than the three major camps.
"How is he?"
"The old wound on my leg hasn't fully healed. The doctor said it's torn again, and I'm still recovering," Lianqiao replied.
"Make sure to instruct your subordinates to take good care of him."
"Don't worry, Miss. This man has saved your life twice. The people in the manor are genuinely taking care of him and will not neglect him."
Shen Li nodded slightly. The last time she was saved was a lie, but this time it was for real.
Moreover, he saved both of them; it's a debt of gratitude that's hard to repay.
"Miss, are you hungry? The kitchen always has meals prepared. Would you like some?" Peony was still a little worried when she saw that her mistress wasn't saying she was hungry.
The doctor said I need to take good care of myself, but how can I feed myself if I'm not eating?
"Indeed, I should eat something and move around a bit more." Shen Li moved her body and felt that the meat and medicine she ate yesterday were probably working, as she felt her energy returning.
"This servant will go right away." Upon hearing this, Peony immediately ran out.
Lian Qiao helped Shen Li wash up, and during the time, Shen Li asked about her illness again.
"The doctor said you were so stressed that you hurt yourself, and then you were exhausted from all the running around," Lianqiao said, her voice filled with concern.
"I guessed so." Shen Li said helplessly, thinking of her loss of composure. "If it weren't for that mouthful of blood, I don't think the hardships and struggles that followed would have defeated me."
"That's what the doctor said too. Your pulse is still strong, which is quite remarkable."
Thinking back to that day, it's no wonder Shen Li lost her composure. If Gu Chang'an had really had an accident, she wouldn't have just coughed up blood; she would have been completely drained.
As instructed by the doctor, Shen Li ate a small meal that day, mainly consisting of staple foods, with a rather bland taste. She only managed to eat an extra chicken leg after she took the initiative to ask for it.
She had intended to go next door to see Gu Chang'an, but she heard that he was meeting with local officials.
She didn't need to listen to her to know what Gu Chang'an was planning. He wanted to crush the Crown Prince in this scheme, so he needed more charges and evidence.
Otherwise, how easy would it be to depose the crown prince?
Even into the night, people continued to come and go from the neighboring courtyard, which was intelligence from various parties.
"Miss, please go and persuade the master. When I went to deliver the bird's nest, the servants were already worried that he would ruin his health if he continued like this." Lian Qiao walked to Shen Li's side.
Shen Li was reading a book at the moment. Upon hearing this, she shook her head slightly: "Let him be. He has anger in his heart. It would be really bad if he kept it inside."
Lian Qiao suddenly realized that what her mistress said made sense.
How could they not be angry after being taken advantage of like this and almost losing their lives?
“When I ask you to deliver the things, my husband will know that I told him to take care of himself. He will know his limits and won’t make me anxious.” Shen Li said, yawning, and handed the book to Lian Qiao: “I’m going to sleep now. Don’t wake me up even if the sky falls tomorrow.”
