Chapter 555 Magic Theory
In Ron's opinion, Umbridge was simply the worst Defense Against the Dark Arts professor he had ever encountered, bar none.
And Umbridge did not disappoint his "trust".
The first Defense Against the Dark Arts class was mostly long-winded and rambling, but it was just boring. Those who were bold enough could secretly daydream or do their own thing.
But in the second lesson, Umbridge's decision to "return Defense Against the Dark Arts to its basics" completely turned teaching into torture.
1. Understand the basic principles of Defense Against the Dark Arts.
2. Learn to identify situations where it is legal to use Defense Against Magic.
3. Evaluate magic defense spells in the context of practical application.
Harry stared at the contents of the blackboard, then looked at Hermione beside him with a puzzled expression.
"So, what exactly does all this mean?"
"Simply put, it tells you when you should use the defensive charm," Hermione said.
Harry was completely stunned and blurted out, "If it's Defense Against the Dark Arts, it's obviously used when encountering dark magic, right? Does that even need explaining?"
"No, you're wrong." Hermione carefully flipped through Wilbert Slinka's *Defense Against Magic*, then gently shook her head. "It says that before using a defensive spell, you must determine whether the opponent's magic truly possesses dark magic characteristics, whether the opponent truly harbors malicious intent, and whether your counterattack will harm innocent bystanders—"
"what?"
Harry rubbed his ears vigorously, then looked at Siron beside him: "Why do I feel like I can't quite understand what Hermione is saying?"
"That's normal, because I don't understand it either." Xiren quickly flipped through his book, "Defense Against Magic Theory."
These were books brought by Umbridge, books she needed to use in her classes. Of course, they weren't given away for free; each of them paid fifteen shiks to buy them.
The price wasn't anything special, similar to most basic textbooks, but if it were at Flourish and Blotts, Siron would never waste a single nut on this book.
Because, just like its name suggests, this book is full of theory, and in a book that is nearly an inch thick, there is not a single word about how to use defensive spells.
Defense Against the Dark Arts, is that name hard to understand?
"I dare say the author of this book has never encountered a dark wizard." Siren casually closed the book and tossed it aside like trash.
"I think so too." Harry nodded, closing the book with the same look of disgust. "If we really followed the whole procedure described in the book, it seems there's no need for any defense at all. The enemy could kill him a hundred times over in that time, a full hundred times!"
Perhaps they were making a bit too much noise, because Umbridge, who was leading them in reading on the podium, immediately looked over.
She first glanced at Siron, a flash of hatred in her eyes, but she said nothing. After a moment, her gaze shifted to Harry beside her.
"Mr. Potter, we're reading now," she said, glancing again at the book Harry had tossed aside.
"Theory of Defense Against Magic," "Do you have any questions about this chapter?"
"I----"
"You should stand up before answering a question!" Umbridge said. "I think it's a student's most basic respect."
"Sorry." Harry had no choice but to stand up.
"You should say you're sorry, Professor Umbridge."

"I'm sorry, Professor Umbridge."
"Very good." Umbridge nodded in satisfaction. "Sit down."
But this time Harry didn't sit back down as she told him to. Instead, he said directly, "I do have a question about the content of this lesson."
Umbridge raised his eyebrows: "I think I've made myself perfectly clear. As long as you read the book carefully from beginning to end, you won't have any problems."
"But Professor—"
You should call me Professor Umbridge.
"Well, Professor Umbridge," Harry exclaimed, "why isn't this book teaching us how to use the Defense Charm?"
After a brief silence, everyone turned to look at Harry.
"Use a defensive spell?" Umbridge chuckled. "Oh dear, I can't imagine using a defensive spell in my class."
"What about the Death Eaters?" Harry continued. "I don't think those so-called theories will help us defeat the Death Eaters."
A buzz of discussion immediately filled the classroom.
"Oh, Potter!" Umbridge smiled even more kindly. "That's an Auror's problem to worry about. You're just a student. Even if you encounter Death Eaters, you can simply ask the Ministry of Magic for help."
"Ha, so you think the Death Eaters will give us time to call for help?" Ron scoffed.
"Hands up, Mr. Weasley!" Umbridge said.
Ron quickly raised his hand high, and Umbridge tried to pretend she didn't see it and turn her face away, but now other people had also raised their hands, all around.
Umbridge had no choice but to have one person stand up.
"What's your name?"
Dean Thomas.
"Speak, Mr. Thomas, what is your problem?"
"Oh, that's the question Ron was asking earlier," Dean said. "If we encounter Death Eaters, how should we immediately request assistance from the Ministry of Magic? And most importantly, how do we persuade those Death Eaters to agree to wait until the Aurors arrive before taking action?"
“I’ll say it again!” Umbridge said, looking at Dean Thomas with a particularly irritating smile. “Do you think I’d encounter Death Eaters in my class?”
"No, but—"
"That's right." Umbridge's voice cut off Dean's. "If you can't, what do you have to worry about?"
"That's a fallacy," Siron said. "We can't stay in this classroom forever!"
"Raise your hand!"
"We'll have to leave school eventually," Siron said, ignoring her completely. "During holidays or graduation, we need to use what we've learned at Hogwarts to protect ourselves."
"You didn't raise your hand, Mr. Ollivander," Umbridge said in a trembling voice.
But Xilun seemed not to hear him and remained seated.
"The Ministry of Magic can protect you!" Umbridge said.
"If the Ministry of Magic could catch all the escaped Death Eaters, I might believe it," Harry interrupted before Siren could speak. "But since those Death Eaters escaped, the Ministry of Magic hasn't caught a single one."
Silence fell over the classroom once again.
"Ten points deducted from Gryffindor, Mr. Potter." Umbridge finally dropped her fake smile, glaring at Harry with a menacing look. "Also, detention, tomorrow morning, in my office!"
