Chapter 582 Professor McGonagall's Confinement
Umbridge's revenge came quickly. She seemed to have already known the answer in her heart, and led the Special Investigations Team straight to the Gryffindor common room.
Since it was right after class, there were quite a few people in the Gryffindor common room. When Umbridge burst in, everyone instinctively covered their mouths and noses and rushed to the open window.
Umbridge's face flushed red as she pretended not to see the people's subtle movements, her small eyes carefully searching for something in the crowd.
However, a few minutes later, Umbridge did not see the two people she was looking for.
She then went to other places, and finally someone came to tell her that Fred and George had been found outside Professor McGonagall's office.
But when Umbridge swung her short legs and rushed over, she received an answer she never expected.
"You must be mistaken, Professor Umbridge," Professor McGonagall said expressionlessly. "Mr. Weasley has been serving his punishment here for violating school rules and probably hasn't had time to set up the trap you mentioned."
"That's impossible!" Umbridge said firmly. "It must have been them, I know everything—"
Standing in the crowd of onlookers, Celen noticed that Umbridge suddenly stepped forward as he spoke, seemingly trying to forcibly take Fred and George away.
But whether it was because of the large movement or because she had run too fast, a slimy, dead frog suddenly fell out of her trouser leg with a thud.
Everyone was disgusted by the scene. Even Professor McGonagall's lips twitched involuntarily, but she still took a step forward and stood in front of Umbridge.
"Minerva—you're going to go against me, aren't you?"
"I won't go against anyone except the Death Eaters," Professor McGonagall said calmly. "But like I just said, Professor Umbridge, they've always been with me."
The two stood facing off at the entrance to the Transfiguration Office.
A moment later, Umbridge took a step back.
"Okay, so, Minerva, what did they do wrong?"
"They broke off a branch of the Whomping Willow at the castle gate while everyone else was in class," Professor McGonagall said angrily.
"Oh?" Umbridge frowned, her previously firm answer seeming to waver a little.
Could it really not be the Weasley brothers?
No, that's not right.
Having fought for so long, Umbridge knew Fred and George's methods all too well. That style couldn't possibly belong to anyone else!
"So, Minerva, how do you plan to punish them?" Umbridge asked in a high-pitched voice after calming down.
"Of course, it's solitary confinement," Professor McGonagall said. "They'll come here on Saturdays to copy 'A Thousand Herbs and Mushrooms' until they've copied the entire book."
“Too lenient, Minerva. This punishment is far too light.” Umbridge shook her head. “The Whomping Willow is a very precious magical tree. I’m afraid many people would like to break off a few branches and take them to Diagon Alley to exchange for Galleons. We must punish them severely to deter others.”
.
Fred and George, who were standing nearby, couldn't help but look up at Umbridge.
What did she think the "Hit-and-Beat Willow" was? The bushes by the door? Someone anyone could just walk over and break off a few branches from?
"Leave them to me," Umbridge continued, a fake smile plastered on his face. "I'll show them just how big a mistake they've made."
"I have already punished them," Professor McGonagall said.
“That’s not enough, Minerva. Copying books is too simplistic a punishment,” Umbridge said. “I think—restoring flogging would be a good idea.”
A murmur arose from the crowd.
Siren saw that in Umbridge's camp, Filch was trembling with joy because of this huge surprise.
The students of Hogwarts all knew that he had always wanted to reinstate the old caning punishment.
"No!" Professor McGonagall exclaimed sternly, "Headmaster Albus Dumbledore would never agree to punish students with a cane!"
"I am a senior investigator—" Umbridge strained her head back, "I have that authority!"
“No, you didn’t,” Professor McGonagall said. “It was the headmaster who abolished the dungeons and flogging, and only the headmaster can decide whether to reinstate them.”
"This is the Ministry of Magic's decision!" Umbridge stepped forward again.
Professor McGonagall remained calm.
"I know, but Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster."
Umbridge looked as if he had been slapped hard, his face quickly turning red.
"Fine, fine, so this is what you really think, isn't it? You want Dumbledore to replace Minister Fudge!"
Professor McGonagall frowned, not understanding how Umbridge had come to this conclusion.
She didn't speak or explain, but Umbridge took it as Professor McGonagall's admission of her statement, which made her even angrier.
"We'll see!" she said angrily as she stormed off.
The Slytherin students from the Special Investigations Unit stood still, watching Umbridge walk further and further away, then glancing at Professor McGonagall beside them, hesitating whether to follow.
But Professor McGonagall ignored them and simply turned to look at Fred and George standing behind her.
Where were we?
"Lockdown," Fred said. "We're going to be copying 'A Thousand Herbs and Mushrooms' on Saturday."
"In addition, Gryffindor will have thirty points deducted, thirty points each." Professor McGonagall scanned the two students. "I hope you understand what a foolish mistake this is!"
"Oh, Professor McGonagall, we already know."
"Yes, we definitely won't do that again next time."
Seeing that the two sincerely admitted their mistakes, Professor McGonagall's expression softened somewhat.
"The NEWT exam is coming up soon, and I hope you can focus on your studies and get more certificates."
Fred and George nodded hastily, vowing to study hard from now on and never cause trouble again.
As for how long this promise will last—nobody knows.
Soon, Professor McGonagall chased away the students who had been watching the commotion and went to clean up the swamp that had been emitting a foul odor. The farce was temporarily put to an end.
But many people know that Umbridge will definitely not let this go so easily.
After Professor McGonagall left, Ron immediately ran over, winking at Fred and George, and said, "You guys definitely did it, right!"
"What do you mean, 'we did it'?"
"Of course, it's that swamp."
"Oh, I don't understand what you're saying." Fred glanced at Ron with disdain, then turned to look at Hermione beside him.
"Hermione, when does S.D.A. start? We can't wait!"
Hermione was a little confused, not understanding why they would mention S.D.A. at this time, but still replied, "This Saturday, which is tomorrow."
