Chapter 599 A One-Sided Victory
Those chosen by Voldemort to become Death Eaters were generally quite powerful; otherwise, they wouldn't have been able to force the Aurors to retreat so decisively during the First Wizarding War. Even with the later addition of members of the Order of the Phoenix, the Death Eaters naturally maintained their advantage.
But these are all records from more than a decade ago.
Since Voldemort's downfall, the Death Eaters either died or fled, and the rest were imprisoned in Azkaban, where they spent more than a decade in a daze under the torture of the Dementors.
In this situation, even if their strength hasn't plummeted, it's certainly not what it was a decade or two ago.
Even these Death Eaters only make up a small portion; the majority are the rabble Voldemort recruited in the past year.
They had virtually no chance of resistance against the Hogwarts professors.
Moreover, apart from Professor Flitwick, who had to stay at the school, almost all the other professors capable of fighting had been summoned by Siron. Even Professor Babling (ancient Runewen), who was rarely seen even a few times a year, made an appearance in the Department of Mysteries.
Her strength was also strange; she didn't even use a wand, but simply clapped her hands, and the five Death Eaters around her were attracted to each other like magnets, unable to break free.
However, Professor Babling disappeared again after that, and Xiren suspected that she was just there for fun and would leave as soon as she was done.
But it doesn't matter.
The professors quickly dealt with the Death Eaters there, and then, led by Sirius Black, marched in a grand procession deeper into the Department of Mysteries.
"Hmm... I don't know if it's just my imagination," Ron whispered, "but why do I get the feeling they seem a little excited?"
"It seems so," Harry said.
Hermione didn't speak, but her puzzled and somewhat bewildered look proved that she thought the same thing as the other two.
"What's so strange about that?" Siren shrugged. "The professors have been taking classes at Hogwarts for over a decade, and the most exciting thing for them is watching Quidditch matches. Now that they have a rare opportunity for a large-scale team-building activity, it's normal for them to be a little excited."
"But isn't this a war?" Hermione still couldn't quite understand. "I mean, this should be a very serious matter."
"That's true," Sirius nodded, "but don't forget, the key to this war lies with Dumbledore. Until he fails, everything else is just cleaning up the mess."
"Yeah—" Fred and George also came over. Their professor had just taken down a Death Eater, and they were still a little unsatisfied.
"It was only because Professor Sprout and Snape came that Professor Flitwick had no choice but to stay at the school."
"I sensed he was a little unhappy."
They chatted while huddling together to figure out how to get Harry out.
But they had never seen this kind of dark magic before; Harry's legs seemed to have become one with the ground.
"We need to know what kind of spell this is," Siron said. "Most dark wizards have their own tricks, and only by knowing the principle behind them can we find the corresponding counter-spell."
He looked at Hermione.
"Those Death Eaters all wear the same hoods and masks, I don't know who they are." Hermione shook her head.
Ron said he felt the same way.
After that chaotic battle, they couldn't even tell who the Death Eaters were anymore.
Moreover, most of these Death Eaters are now unconscious, making it even more difficult to confirm.
Ten minutes later, several wisps of black mist suddenly swept past in front of everyone with a whoosh, and disappeared through the gate in the next second.
Then, the professors returned to the same spot.
"They've run away," Professor Sprout said, frowning as he looked at the empty room.
"Those cowards," Hagrid gasped, cursing viciously, "they're less courageous than a caterpillar."
Professor McGonagall appeared relatively calm. She knew very well that defeating the Death Eaters wouldn't be difficult, but capturing them wouldn't be so easy, especially those Death Eaters who had been targeted by Voldemort—escaping had always been their specialty.
"At least we've caught quite a few Death Eaters this time," Professor Sinestad said. "I'd like to see how Fudge has any more explanation."
"Professor McGonagall, Harry has been struck by dark magic—" Hermione asked tentatively, "Can you get him out of there?"
Everyone immediately looked at Harry, who was surrounded in the middle. However, Professor McGonagall's attempts to break the spell against this unknown dark magic were all in vain. Hagrid even interrogated several Death Eaters roughly, but they either refused to say anything or shouted that they really didn't know.
"We need to get to Albus quickly; I just saw him," Professor McGonagall said seriously, glancing at Snape beside her.
"How about we use that move? You help me with it."
Sirius and Harry looked at Professor McGonagall with confusion, not understanding what she meant by "that move".
But Snape clearly understood; he glanced at Harry and showed some resistance.
"Why can't we leave him here?" Snape said coldly.
"Perhaps, only after paying a price will our great and brave savior realize that he is not a troll. Wizards use their brains to think of solutions when faced with problems, only trolls would charge forward recklessly."
Snape's words were as harsh as ever, and Harry's face turned even redder. From a distance, it looked like Ron's hair had grown longer.
"Severus, we cannot punish a student in this way," Professor McGonagall retorted.
Snape snorted.
In fact, this was his truest thought deep down: as long as Harry was alive, nothing else mattered.
Seeing that Snape remained silent, Professor McGonagall looked at Professor Sprout.
"I'm fine, Minerva," Professor Sprout said readily.
Professor McGonagall nodded, and she counted to three in a low voice. The two of them raised their wands at the same time, and when the tips of the wands turned orange-yellow, they plunged them into the ground.
"All curses are over!" the two shouted at the same time.
A similar orange-yellow flame spread rapidly, and in the instant it swept over Harry, his leg was pulled out of the ground.
"Ouch—"
Harry lost his balance and fell backward uncontrollably, but Ron caught him in time.
"Fortunately, if this spell doesn't work, then we'll just have to wait for Albus to solve it." Professor McGonagall pulled her wand out again.
"Let's go, we need to help him."
A large group of people then ran out the door in a grand procession.
Besides the Hogwarts professors, there were also Alastor Moody, Sirius Black, Tonks, Mr. Weasley from the Order of the Phoenix, and a few others from Sirius who looked familiar but whose names he couldn't recall.
