Chapter 221: Game One (1)
Chapter 221: Game One (1)From the beginning, their only plan was to secure Princess Coreen and nothing else. Spade knew that it was not yet time to go head-on against the organization.
He never hoped that the elite team he deployed would miraculously capture the Marquis at once with his wife; the chances of that happening were not even zero percent.
Spade was aware that there was no way the Marquis would not sense the shift in the air in the capital with his intuition and might make countermeasures for himself. However, he still miscalculated this time. Knowing that they could escape at any moment, he already made preparations beforehand, and some of his forces were deployed earlier on to encircle the possible routes of escape and not far from the Ford Mansion.
He should’ve known; his opponent was in no way simple. The moment he smelled trouble, he had already disappeared like smoke, leaving blood in his path.
"I..." Levin deflatedly sat on the couch, rubbing his face fiercely in an aggrieved manner. "I should have dragged my mom then." His tone was filled with regret. There was always a consequence to his mind being a mess after the emotion had gone down.
Because he broke down after knowing the truth, he only thought of his well-being! Levin’s teeth clenched, anger for himself and his father.
Arren clasped his hands in front of him, leaning against Spade’s table. He pursed his lips and lowered his head. He didn’t know what to say. His heartbeat was already rising, and he was only controlling himself. Hearing their conversation, he already confirmed his guess.
Marquis Ford, Levin’s father, was the organization’s leader! Playing with his fingers and biting his lips, Arren was too shocked, even though he sort of anticipated it. How did it all come to this?
He couldn’t even sympathize with Levin because he was too preoccupied with his thoughts. Amidst his shock, he tried to remember Marquis Ford’s face, and as he was about to do so, a comforting hand rested on his shoulders, stopping his thoughts.
Unknowingly, Arren had already fallen silent, and his face was so pale that he appeared to forget to breathe. Only after lifting his head and making eye contact with Spade did he exhale and catch his breath.
"How are you feeling?" Spade asked, concerned. "You can rest if you want to," he added, his gaze focused on Arren and observing him, eyes filled with worry.
Looking into those eyes, the way Arren clasped his hand loosened slightly. He shook his head and managed a small smile to appear on his lips. "I’m fine." His eyes glanced at Levin, who was now almost out of it again, looking downward and clenching his hands. "You can talk with Levin."
He didn’t want to make the situation to eb about himself. At this moment, Spade should be more focused on the operation instead. There would be a lot of people who would lose their lives if something went wrong a long the way.
Spade stared at him for longer to confirm that he was fine, and Arren smiled and reached out to grab Spade’s hand to give him further assurance.
Only when he was sure that Spade proceeded to talk with Levin. He didn’t think it was selfish or insensitive to look after his omega first; for him, Arren was far more important than anything else.
"It’s also my fault." Spade spoke in a solemn tone, blaming himself. "I still underestimated how the Marquis would react to my plans and didn’t factor in my aunt’s value to him."
Actually, at first, it made sense that Spade didn’t consider it. Aside from the fact that he still couldn’t read the leader’s action and was haywired in his thinking, he only thought that his aunt was only a piece for him that he could disregard when troubles arise.
However, given that the Marquis brought his aunt along, he still valued their marriage. Hopefully, it wasn’t because... His aunt still had something he could exploit. Deep inside, Spade was more inclined to the possibility of the latter.
"It comes to a dead end." He paused, narrowing his eyes, refusing to be fooled a second time. "The capital is now on high alert; it’s still hard for them to leave that easily." Spade’s tone held some aggressiveness and called the alpha’s name, who already looked up to him and showed a stance whenever Spade was about to order him something almost instinctively.
"Levin," he called, in the tone of a monarch. At this moment, they were back to their relationship as a moacrh and his chief guard, given the situation.
"Yes, Your Majesty." Despite being down and on the verge of another bout of self-blame and guilt, his tone still carried anticipation.
"Meet with the forces outside of your mansion and
Empress Liviera now looked up and stared at Spade, making eye contact with him through his darkened amber pupils. Arren seemed to see the tension in the air materialized between them.
"Royal Mother, what’s happen—" Spade had yet to finished when a crisped of sound from slapping of skin sounded in the room, his head whipped at the side and his left cheek reddened instantly as blood dripped from the corner of his lips, indicating how Empress Liviera used so much force he could muster with that slap.
Empress Liviera just slapped Spade in front of everyone’s dumbfounded expression.
